Lot 3 - A stunning antique hand written & illustrated manuscript copy of 'The Seed', a collection of poems, likely unpublished, by author Paula Fitzgerald (b.1896 - d.1972) and illustrated by Agatha Fitzgerald (later Cameron, b.1895 - d.1961), her sister, with beautiful embossed and gilt leather cover, replete with colour and black and white illustrations and marbled end boards, some small amendments pasted over (now loose), minor wear and staining, otherwise very good and a very rare piece, with small label for Watson Ferguson & Co. (Brisbane)
Paula appears several times in newspapers; in particular, in winning an award at age 15 for her short Christmas story in 1911, and with a poem 'The Shadows' that was published in The Daily Mail which featured illustrations by her sister. She would have poems published in the Bulletin, the Jindyworobak Anthology, Meanjin Papers, and a copy of her book 'The Lady of the Blue Cloak' is in the National Library of Australia
Agatha and Paula were the daughters of a Mr James Frances Fitzgerald and Mrs Laura Fitzgerald (d.1941) of Enderley, New Farm, Brisbane, with their uncle being Rev. Father Fitzgerald; the sisters also had a brother, F. Fitzgerald, and another, Cyril Martin (b.1891 - d.1918) who was killed in action in WWI; Agatha married Dr. Gavin Holme Cameron in 1920
