Very good condition; some yellowing appropriate to age, some rubbed in blackening presumably applied to raise the details, some cracks and loss to end of tusk below cuff, velvet rope tied to body
These pieces were typically carved for the purposes of trade with French and Belgian merchants in the area, with many featuring European inspired scenes. For similar examples, see 2022.516.1 & 2022.516.2 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art; and a 'Loango, West African, Kongo Peoples Carved Ivory Tusk' sold at Finch & Co., plus others at the Walters and Brooklyn Art Museums
