Lot 3 - A British Wilkinson Pattern 1907 Sword Bayonet, for use with the Short Magazine Lee Enfield Rifle, with steel & leather scabbard and frog; with Wilkinson stamp to ricasso, accompanied by 1907, 58cm
A British Wilkinson Pattern 1907 Sword Bayonet, for use with the Short Magazine Lee Enfield Rifle, with steel & leather scabbard and frog; with Wilkinson stamp to ricasso, accompanied by 1907 and indistinct marks, with X bend test to reverse with two British Cyphers: a crown above A6/E and a crown above X/E. There is an additional mark above the blackened ricasso, possibly a DX.
The pommel features a regimental mark: O.T.C. / AMP / 125 presumably for the Officers Training Corps, with a designation possibly for the Universities of Southampton, Wolverhampton, Northampton, or Roehampton.
Interestingly, the timber grip seems to have been switched, potentially, with the M1917 Bayonet also found within this auction and hailing from the same collection, and with British marks. The two notches (transverse cuts) to the grip were considered an integral feature of the M1917 to help distinguish it from other bayonets in low light.
The Bayonet is approx. 55.5cm in Length, with the entire blade in scabbard approx. 58cm.
