Like many Canberrans, we were surprised to read yesterday’s news about the closure of The Green Shed on 31 May 2024

However, those headlines are a little misleading because the waste management services are not exactly disappearing with their incumbent operator - which is great news for Canberra’s commitment to a waste-reduced economy.
So what’s changing? The Green Shed was not the successful tenderer for the renewal of the waste management contract to re-sell items otherwise destined for landfill at the Mugga Lane and Mitchell sites. The successful tenderer was the St Vincent de Paul Society Canberra/Goulburn.
In terms of the Mugga Lane and Mitchell depots currently managed by The Green Shed, it sounds like the same or substantially similar waste management services will be provided, just under a different structure. And until the transitional arrangements are disclosed or underway, all anyone can do is speculate, which is never particularly helpful.
We have received many enquiries from people overnight about what the implications of this may be for Canberra’s commitment to a circular economy, especially in light of Christopher Steel MLA formally launching Canberra’s first Circular Economy Strategy on 28 August 2023. One of the Strategy’s six focus areas is consumer goods.
What we do know is that for anyone in the community who has expressed that they value The Green Shed for being without any religious affiliation, you are welcome here at The Auction Barn.
We are a local, family-owned business, established in 2008. We operate from 10 Wiluna Street Fyshwick and are open 7 days a week.
We are passionate about diverting waste from landfill and facilitate over 200 auctions each year in the general goods, antiques and collectibles categories. As well as offering generous terms, we auction items that you may find other organisations do not accept as donations: like lighting and electrical.
We support Canberra families with their estate sale requirements, offer a buy-it-now showroom for all your vintage and antique shopping needs, and facilitate multiple weekly online auctions for your preloved goods.
If you have quality items that you’d normally drop off at the Green Shed but would like to sell instead, please reach out to our friendly team who will be pleased to explain the process and register you as a seller.
Given current cost of living impacts affecting so many people in our community, selling unwanted items (namely, items you were already prepared to donate) is a strategic way to earn a supplementary income, while also ensuring they are kept in circulation.
You can do this as a one-off or with regularity, depending on your requirements. We have many regular vendors who have been selling items at our auctions for years.
Let’s all band together and solidify our commitment to diverting waste from landfill. The Auction Barn is pleased to be one of the organisations providing a circular solution for Canberra’s preloved goods and we do that best by effortlessly connecting sellers with buyers.
For further information please contact us on (02) 6239 2096 or email us at [email protected]. We look forward to meeting you and continuing our commitment to keeping quality consumer goods out of Canberra’s landfill.
