This triptych, with its white walls, cane furniture, palm and borders which suggest minimalist window frames or vertical blinds, is evocative of both the 1980s and today. This enhances the sense of a moment suspended in time created by the still life on the table, the fragmented image, and absence of shadows, people or other animating influences. The overall effect is of calm and warmth, as of a quiet summer's day.

Attributed to Roy Fairchild-Woodard, who, early in his career, worked as a commercial illustrator and printmaking as Roy Woodard, while also developing a parallel painting practice as Roy Fairchild. As an established artist he focuses on painting and now exhibits as Roy Fairchild-Woodard.

ID - 385407 - Framed Works 'Rama' and 'Princess Sita' Late '60s/early '70s, Two Rare Wayang Kulit (traditional Javanese Shadow Puppets) of Extraordinary Craftsmanship. Created from Intricately Painted and Pierced Buffalo Hide Leather with Support Rods of Buffalo Horn. Each Framed in a Gold-tone Frame.

Both works attributed to Hendro Yuwono (active mid-Twentieth century, Java Indonesia). Yuwono is said to have born the title 'Prince of Heaven' in recognition of his status as pre-eminent master puppet-maker and puppeteer (dalang) of his generation.

Both works were purchased from Yuwono in Java and arrived in Australia in 1973, where they have been in a private collection until this time. Others of this series are reported to be in the personal collection of former Queen Juliana of the Netherlands, following her royal visit to Indonesia in 1971.

The white puppet represents Rama, the force of good, while the black puppet represents his devoted wife sita, known for goodness and loyalty. They are central figures in the Ramayana, an epic which is one of the foundations of Indian culture and Influential in South East Asian cultures, Including in Java, where it is a central theme of wayang kulit.

Approx Height, each Figure, Including Horn Rod: 68 cm.
