Provenance: purchased by the current owner from Art Equity
Gloria Petyarre, or Gloria Pitjarra, was one of the most significant Utopia artists, many of whom are also part of her extended family, such as her aunt, the extraordinary Emily Kame Kngwarreye. Like many senior women artists of Utopia, Gloria Petyarre first rose to prominence working in batik, which were exhibited nationally and internationally during the 1970s and 1980s. In the late 1980s she began painting in acrylic, leading to her first solo show at Australian Galleries (NY) in 1991. Since then her paintings have been widely exhibited and are held in significant public and private collections. She won the AGNSW Wynn Prize for landscape in 1999 and was a finalist an additional four times.
Gloria Petyarres paintings are influenced by womens ceremonial body painting designs, the environment of her ancestral homelands, and the traditional knowledge for which she was responsible. Together, these gave rise to flowing, brush strokes and references to yam, grass seed, bush medicine leaves and the thorny devil.
Gloria Petyarre retired from full time painting in 2019 due to ill health, but her painting traditions have been adopted and adapted by other generations of her family. As an originator if this significant strand of painting, her works are highly collectable both in Australia and internationally.
