ID - 435479 - Attributed to George Frederick Gregory Jr. (b.1857 - d.1913) 'SS Kaiser Wilhelm II', c. 1891, watercolour heightened with gouache on paper, SLR 'G. F. Gregory' The SS Kaiser Wilhelm II (1889-1908) was a four mast passenger steamer, built for the North German Lloyd Company. Following a route of Bremen - Suez - Sydney, the Kaiser Wilhelm II completed six round trips, visiting two places in Australia, Largs Bay off South Australia, and Sydney, between 1889 and 1892. It was sunk in 1892 or 1893 after a valve failure, its masts reduced to two, and renamed the SS Hohenzollern. Not to be confused with the SS Kaiser Wilhelm II, which later became the USS Agamemnon Recently conserved by ConservARTorium, Canberra; treatment report available Provenance: a Queensland/Sydney family, from c.1890
ID - 435480 - Attributed to George Frederick Gregory Sr. (b.1821 - d.1887) 'A Shipwreck Scene', c. 1871, watercolour heightened with gouache on paper, SLR 'G.F. Gregory 1871', 84cm (L) x 139cm (W) Although this ship is unidentified at this point in time, the Gregory family were known to execute naive but accurate depictions of ships that had visited the Australian coast. It is possible, through research, that this moment of history may be identifiable. Recently conserved by ConservARTorium, Canberra; treatment report available Provenance: a Queensland/Sydney family, from c.1890
