ID - 432172 - Raden Basoeki (Basuki) Abdullah (1915-1993, Indonesian) Untitled (portrait of Helen Cross/portrait of a young woman wearing pearl earrings), oil on stretched canvas, SLR 'Basoeki Abdulla Jakart Indonesia - 93 Febr', inscribed to verso 'original painting' and 'with many love from Jakarta - Indonesia'
Works by Basuki Abdullah are rarely available in Australia. He was a prominent Indonesian realist painter who trained in the Hague prior to the second world war and afterwards became known for his sensuous portraits and romantic landscape paintings. Since his death, his paintings have become particularly sought after in centres across South and East Asia, including Hong Kong.
Throughout her life Helen Cross was known for her charity work in Australia and in Indonesia, where her focus included fundraising for the disadvantaged in the Aceh region, while based there with her husband, the late Brigadier General David Cross, then Defence Attache in Indonesia. It is likely that this portrait was painted in Indonesia during this time. On their return to Australia, Cross continued to contribute to public life, including election to the ACT Legislative Assembly, and as a Life Member of the Hellenic Club of Canberra
